Since obtaining a doctorate in music history from the University of Oxford in 1985, I have gained very extensive freelance and in-house editorial experience, including copy-editing material for the second edition of The New Grove Dictionary of Music (1998–2000) and the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (2000–03). I am an Advanced Professional Member of the UK Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) and have a working knowledge of languages including French, German, and Italian. I have regular work as copy-editor for the journal Library & Information History and as editor for the research and educational institute Scholarship & Christianity in Oxford (SCIO). I also proofread sheet music, especially vocal and educational works.
Since 2014 I have been based in the USA, but I continue to work mainly for British clients. I frequently work with authors for whom English is not their first language.

What is copy-editing?
Copy-editing involves a deep reading of a text to ensure integrity and clarity. I check and correct aspects including grammar, spelling, punctuation, and the styling of references, and raise queries where these are unclear or inconsistent. I also look at factual consistency across the text (fact-checking is not included). Copy-editing is normally followed by proofreading, the final check before a text is published.
